Recipe: Simple Breakfast Pastries

My mom sent me this recipe that she got from the Aldi Test Kitchen ( This particular recipe comes from Chef Kates and it’s very yummy and easy to prepare! You’ll feel like a pastry chef whiz and it offers many possibilities for new combinations. When I prepared it this morning I used a honey nut cream cheese and did not include the lemon zest. It was awesome – my mom drizzled honey over hers, and we might use apple pie filling and regular cream cheese when we make it again. The opportunities are endless – yum!

Ingredients – approx. $1.95 per serving

2 packages crescent roll dough

1/2 cup strawberry jam

1/2 cup cream cheese

1 fresh lemon, zested


Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface and use fingers to press together triangles into a square shape. Trim edges to make a perfect square (I didn’t trim mine, the shape was a bit crazy but the flavor was still awesome)! Spoon 1 tablespoon cream cheese into the center of each square. Top with a sprinkle of lemon zest and 1 tablespoon strawberry jam. Pull up opposite corners of each pastry, pinching in the center, then repeat with opposite corners. (Be sure to pinch everything well to avoid the filling from running out). Place pastries on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before removing from the sheets; filling will be very hot.
